The Best Singles of 2013, #20

band01Alcest, “Opale”

The latest entry in this top 20 list, the first single from Alcest’s fourth full-length Shelter is very much in keeping with the aesthetic created by singer-songwriter Neige, yet is completely different. Employing the services of Sigur Ros producer Jón Birgisson the new record is lighter, dreamier, sunnier than any previous Alcest recording, and the pop-oriented “Opale” is easily the sunniest. It’s a bold statement by an artist who won’t deny his desire for crossover success, and judging by the way it approaches the peculiar beauty of Cocteau Twins yet retains its own identity, that could very well happen in 2014.
