The Best Singles of 2013, #10

band01Mutya Keisha Siobhan, “Flatline”

One of the more surreal stories in music in 2013 was how Sugababes, who had become a joke of rotating members, imploded before everyone’s eyes, yet at the same time the original Sugababes – Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan, and Siobhan Donaghy – reunited for the first time since their debut 2000 album One Touch. And although the output has been slow, with a new album due in 2014, the trio came through with one of 2013’s best singles in “Flatline”. A collaboration with the über-hip Dev Hynes of Blood Orange notoriety, it’s not your usual modern pop song, taking a much more understated approach, featuring a minimal, breezy, summery arrangement that emphasizes their beautiful three-part harmonies. Chart-wise it didn’t exactly set the UK on fire, but Hynes’ involvement lends MKS more credibility than your usual girly pop group, and the grace of “Flatline” bodes very, very well for the future.
