Banks, “Beggin’ For Thread”

Singer-songwriter Jillian Banks was pegged as an artist to watch at the end of 2013, and for good reason. Fitting neatly into the current trend of women singers/auteurs putting their own dark twist on electronic pop music and R&B, Banks’s rise was well timed, and her single “Beggin’ For Thread” was the one song from her debut album Goddess that clicked most with listeners. And for good reason, too. Built around a very simple, deeply low synth melody that gives the sing an immediate goth atmosphere, Banks sings her confessional lyrics a la Fiona Apple, only keeping the listener at an arm’s length with her detached delivery. Her lyrics are clever too, singing, “You got me beggin’ for thread / To sew this hole up that you ripped in my head.” Singer-songwriters are a dime a dozen these days, it seems, but Banks has a unique voice, and based on the strength of this song, I’m hoping she sticks around.
