9. Jessie Ware, “Tough Love”
The best track from Jessie Ware’s second album was the one that hearkened the most to her stellar debut two years ago. Minimalist in structure, with the barest of synth arrangement and the subtlest percussion, the song places Ware’s voice front and centre. That’s all you need to do to make a great Jessie Ware track: strip everything down and let the woman sing, because she can take the simplest arrangement and nail it beyond expectation. She excels at the slow-burn song, and “Tough Love” is about as perfect as it can get. What else is there to say?
