7. St. Vincent, “Digital Witness”

Already firmly established as one of the most innovative singer-songwriters and guitarists of the last decade or more, Annie Clark finally found a way to integrate pop music into her idiosyncratic, amorphous music on her self-titled 2014 album, and nowhere did the formula work better than on “Digital Witness”. Featuring a playful, cozy ‘80s electronic arrangement that immediately brings The Art of Noise to mind, Clark questions today’s selfie-obsessed culture and its constant desire for validation on social media: “If I can’t show it, if you can’t see me / What’s the point of doing anything?” Clark went as far as to politely request concert audiences not shoot cell phone footage at her shows, but when I saw her perform in June, in a wonderful bit of irony, as soon as the popular “Digital Witness” started, the phones came out, their bright little screens aimed straight at Clark.
