12. Kacey Musgraves, “Biscuits”

Sure, “Biscuits” was a complete thematic rehash of Kacey Musgraves’ memorable 2013 single “Follow Your Arrow”, right down to its cheeky, right wing-baiting permissiveness, but it’s impossible to deny that she does that “think for yourself” shtick extremely well. It’s all in her personality: she’s strong but gentle, politely poetic yet not above a little coarse language, with a voice that wins you over immediately. The rest of her album broadened Musgraves’ sound beautifully, but this little single made the punters happy, and was a shrewd move that kept that forward momentum going. And if you ask me, this just might be the superior song. (Spotify) (YouTube)
