18. Banks, “Fuck With Myself”
Jillian Banks has enormous potential as a singer-songwriter, capable of edgy, minimalist electro-pop, steamy R&B, and just enough Kate Bush weirdness to set her apart from her peers. While her 2016 album The Altar overshot its target, slipping too far from avant-pop to forgettable triteness, “Fuck With Myself” was an inspired moment. The title is a blunt confession that she’s her own worst enemy, something we all feel, and she transforms the phrase into a nasty little hook atop a sumptuous arrangement of stuttering beats and chiming synths.
