16. The Last Shadow Puppets, “Miracle Aligner”
I hadn’t caught on to the Last Shadow Puppets’ output this year until I decided on the spur of the moment to wander across the grounds at the Osheaga festival and check the band out at the other end of the park. When I got there the band launched into “Miracle Aligner”, complete with string section, and I was blindsided by their wonderful combination of Scott Walker-style orchestral pop, Jarvis Cocker’s acerbic persona, and Richard Hawley’s English soul. Their performance was so good I was wondering why Alex Turner wastes his time with the Arctic Monkeys. This band is so much better, as this beautiful, swooning single attests.
