19. Chromatics, “Shadow”
The new series of Twin Peaks will go down as arguably the most daring television experiment in history. Enthralling, befuddling, hilarious, and horrifying, David Lynch and Mark Frost threw any sense of conventionality out the window, creating a story that’ll have people buzzing for another 25 years. It was art that challenges its audience, leaving no easy answers, serving up no neatly packaged resolution. Dreampop band Chromatics appeared at the end of the first episode, first playing an instrumental live, and then featuring the hazy “Shadow” over the closing credits. It was the perfect way to cap off something I and many others had been waiting a quarter century for, very much in keeping with the show’s aesthetic, and it left an indelible mark.
