17. Mitski, “Geyser”
It only takes 183 seconds for Mitzki Miyawaki to achieve more than most other pop songs in 2018 could in four minutes. I never cared for her music prior to this year, but “Geyser” floored me with its boldness, its complete abandonment of convention. There’s no structure, there are some shocking surprises (that blast of noise at the 27 second mark, for instance). It’s basically a steady build towards a sweeping climax reminiscent of Kate Bush and her acolytes Bat For Lashes, St. Vincent, and Florence Welch. Like another great short song, Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire”, “Geyser” is emotionally raw, full of stark beauty, and an instant classic.
