The Best Tracks of 2019, #15

15. Haim, “Summer Girl”

Two years after their last album, Danielle, Este, and Alana kept themselves in the public eye in 2019 by putting out a series of very, very good singles, the best of which being the sweet “Summer Girl”. Softly jazzy in a ’70s Joni Mitchell sort of way, the song was written in the wake of Ariel Rechtshaid’s cancer diagnosis, and all the way through, Danielle, his partner, sings to him as if to comfort him but not quite masking her own deep worry. That vulnerability lends the track a melancholy quality that makes it so charming, which builds to an emotional climax: “The tears behind your dark sunglasses / The fears inside your heart as deep as gashes / You walk beside me, not behind me / Feel my unconditional love.”
