9. Lana Del Rey, “Doin’ Time”
On a masterpiece of an album loaded with astounding original compositions that established her as an American pop icon, Lana Del Rey also pulled off an astonishing cover of one of the best songs by the late, great ska-punk singer-songwriter Brad Nowell. Incredibly, Del Rey and producer Andrew Watt don’t change much: the dreamy trip-hop beat remains, as does the clever nod to Porgy & Bess’s “Summertime”. However, Del Rey turns in a performance that captures the essence of the song better than Nowell and Sublime ever did, drawling the lyrics in a way that exude the heat, laziness, and sexiness of summertime at its most unrelenting. Accentuated beautifully by a wonder video that pays homage to Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman, “Doin’ Time” became an instant highlight on Norman Fucking Rockwell!, not to mention one of the defining songs of the summer of 2019.
