3. Bille Eilish, “Bad Guy”
As predicted – and orchestrated, skeptics will say – Billie Eilish absolutely blew the hell up in 2019, and when the 17 year-old released her debut album When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? in March, the first song to grab listeners by the throat was the murky, confrontational “Bad Guy”, which, as the year went on, became an anthem for many, young and old. Atop an absolutely wicked arrangement by Finneas that straddles trap and goth, Eilish taunts her misogynist target with bluntness, humor, and maturity, ultimately turning the tables with a stunning statement of dominance: “I’m that bad type, make your girlfriend mad tight, might seduce your dad type.” Coming off a decade dominated by the increasingly cloying Taylor Swift, Eilish became a much more badass icon for a new generation, a welcome change atop the pop throne.
